The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Monday introduced USB Type-C receptacles, plugs and cable standards. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said in its statement that BIS has introduced three important Indian Standards in the field of electronics. Actually, the government has made this major change in the charging port of the gadgets to benefit the customers and reduce the electronic waste.

The Bureau of Indian Standards has introduced quality standards for three electronic devices Digital Television Receiver, USB Type-C Charger and Video Surveillance System (VSS). BIS says it aims to provide a common charging solution for smartphones and other electronic devices sold in the country. This is going to benefit the users of all these devices and at the same time it is expected to be of great help to the government’s campaign to reduce e-waste.

  • The Bureau of Indian Standards is the first standard for digital television receivers with built-in satellite tuners. The Bureau of Indian Standards has introduced an Indian Standard IS 18112:2022 for televisions with built-in satellite tuners. According to the statement, TVs manufactured according to this Indian standard enable viewing of free-to-air TV and radio channels by combining a dish antenna with an LNB. That means users will not need to buy dish antenna again and again to watch different and different paid and free channels.
  • The second standard is for USB Type C receptacles, plugs, and cables. The Bureau of Indian Standards has published the Indian Standard IS/IEC 62680-1-3:2022 on USB Type-C cables and connectors. This Indian Standard has been introduced on the basis of the existing International Standard IEC 62680-1- 3:2022. This standard stands for a single USB Type-C port, plug and cable for use in various electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, notebooks, etc. That is, this standard will be for general charging for smartphones and other electronic devices sold in the country.
  • The third standard is for Video Surveillance System (VSS), which adopts the international standard IES 62676 series. It provides a detailed outline of requirements for all aspects of a video surveillance system such as camera devices, interfaces, system requirements and tests for image quality.
The government believes that by using the same type of charger for all devices, users will not need to buy a separate charger every time they buy a new device and this will also reduce e-waste.

Please tell that at present, chargers with many types of ports are being used in the country. That is, you have to carry a charger with different ports for different devices. Most of the inconveniences to the users are during the journey.

The European Union (EU) has made the first rule regarding universal chargers, since then countries around the world are working to solve this issue. The European Union says that by the end of 2024, all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will be sold with a USB Type-C charging port.

This decision will help in reducing e-waste and provide more sustainable products to the users. While Apple said that after the introduction of universal charger, innovation will end and pollution will also increase, although Apple did not give the reason behind this.
