A 34-year-old Indian man has been sentenced to over seven years in prison in the US after being convicted of smuggling drugs worth Rs 280 crore. The man was accused of supplying opioids (drugs) to the US through illegal smuggling from India and Singapore.
Federal prosecutors in Boston said in a statement Thursday that convict Manish Kumar shipped millions of illegal and unapproved pills to people in the US who did not have prescriptions. Kumar was sentenced by US District Court Judge Mark L Wolf to 87 months in prison and three months of supervised release, the statement said. He was also ordered to pay a fine of US$100,000.
Convict Manish Kumar supplied drugs to the US through advertisements and calls to potential customers from call centers in India. Kumar personally directed and managed payments from drug suppliers in Massachusetts and other states in Singapore and India.
Prosecutors said that in total, Kumar’s drug business generated more than 280 crore rupees in revenue and shipped millions of illegal and unapproved pills to people in the United States who did not have prescriptions.
