New Delhi: Former world No. 1 and seventh seed Daniil Medvedev lost to American 29th seed Sebastian Korda in the third round of the 2023 Australian Open on Friday. Medvedev was the runner-up in the 2021 and 2022 editions of the tournament, losing the match in straight sets. The scoreline ended 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) in favor of Korda.

22 year old Korda did wonders

Sebastian Korda, 22, got the biggest win of his career on the same court where his father Petr won the Australian Open 25 years ago. Petr Korda is the 1998 Australian Open champion. It is the third time the 22-year-old has reached the round of 16 in a major.

First set lasted for 85 minutes

The first set lasted 85 minutes, but Korda took a 4–2 lead in the third, before Medvedev came back to lead 5–4. It was the first time in the match that the 26-year-old Russian player Medvedev was leading in a set. The set eventually went to a tie-break. American player Korda dominated and won 7-1.

Medvedev had earlier reached the third round after defeating John Millman 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. “Incredible match, I knew what I had to do and I stuck with it even when I was going up and down emotionally,” Korda said after the match. The 22-year-old, who won the junior title at the 2018 Australian Open, has now reached his best performance at a Grand Slam by reaching the round of 16, where he will face Polish 10th seed Hubert Hercz.

Lose to Djokovic and Nadal too

Medvedev won the US Open two years ago and made it to the final in Australia in 2021, when he lost to Novak Djokovic. Rafael also lost to Nadal this year after holding a two-set lead. Medvedev lost the 2021 final to Novak Djokovic and the 2022 title match to Rafael Nadal. In February 2022, Medvedev joined Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray and became the first man since Andy Roddick in 2004 to be ranked No. 1 in the ATP rankings.
