New Delhi: India registered a resounding 2-0 win over Spain in the Hockey World Cup. After this victory, Team India will now take on England in the next Pool D match at Rourkela’s Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium on Sunday. This will be a crucial match for the Harmanpreet Singh-led side as a win will strengthen their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.

Coach Graham Reid gave a big statement
Before this match, Team India coach Graham Reid made a big statement. He said- We are against England next and it will be a tough match, they are ranked higher than us. We know how tough England are in the Commonwealth Games.” The two sides have faced each other thrice with their last match played at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year, which ended 4-4 in the group stage. He scored in a 3–3 draw in the first leg of the Pro League match, before India won the second leg 4–3, both matches being played in April.

Reid said, “So we will try to keep up the good work. We did really well against Spain, we have to keep it going.” Captain Harmanpreet Singh agreed that England will be tough opponents and the home team will have to play their best hockey to beat them. “We are taking it match by match. Spain is done now and our focus is on England and we are planning for that.” Drag Flicker said, “Winning penalty corners is very important and we can get better at converting them. We hope to do better in this regard.”

India got five penalty corners against Spain. Rohidas, who started learning hockey from Pamposh Sports Hostel in Rourkela, said that execution of the team’s plans will be the key to win matches. He said, “I started here at Pamposh Sports Hostel and it is a great feeling to play at home. The support of such a huge crowd motivated us, but once we are on the pitch, we try to focus on the game.” “It is a team effort and because of the team, I got a chance to score in front of a home crowd which included my family members. We are not under pressure and the key to our success will be the execution of the team’s plans.”
