Menstrual Leave: A university in Kerala has decided to give menstrual leave to its female students. The Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) has taken the decision following an appeal by the university’s student union.
The university has issued an order in this regard. It is said that this decision has been taken after discussing the long pending demand of the girl students. This decision of the university will benefit more than 4,000 students studying in various streams including Ph.D.
No need for medical certificate for menstruation
After this decision of the university, girl students can claim leave during menstruation. Under this decision, the girl students will be given an additional leave benefit of 2 percent in every semester.
At present, only those with 75% attendance can appear for the semester exams. If the attendance is less than this, it is mandatory to submit the medical certificate by submitting an application to the Vice-Chancellor. However, medical certificate is not required for menstrual leave and students only need to submit an application.
The student union had demanded under the leadership of SFI
The students’ union of the university, led by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), demanded that the university should allow menstrual leave. The decision was taken after the union’s intervention.
Let us tell you that Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala had last month decided to give 60 days maternity leave to its degree and postgraduate students.
